Diplomacy, let alone good maners, requires a certain degree of deference when you are a visitor, as Obama was. Honesty as well as many scriptural injuctions requrie a Chistian to stand firm in his belief, and for his words to reflect those beliefs. However, from my reading of other things that President Obama has said, his definition of Christian is somewhat different from mine. I think you are right.
